Started out in Birmingham, joining Roy Woods Wizzard in the 70¹s and later Mike Burney is a veteran of the Jazz scene in the UK and in addition is one of the most experienced Sax players who spans a whole spectrum of music including Big Band, POP and Blues and Jazz over a whole era in cluding the heyday of British Pop. His style of Jazz playing covers the light and shade of Jazz music and he can be both lyrical in a ballad and show the harder edge of his saxophone when he plays some of his more up tempo Jazz pieces. Mike Burney has played with a whole galaxy of stars over the years and was a member of Roy Wood's Wizard recorded hits including "I wish it could be Christmas everyday." It is him playing the sax on the video that is regularly seen when Wizard is seen on TV. He was also in Billy Fury's backing band from 1968 to 1970. Until recently Mike spent 8 years with The Syd Lawrence Orchestra, internationally famous, and known as the best big band in the UK. He toured Japan with CHAKA KHAN and even recorded on an album with The Beach Boys! Mike Burney has accompanied international stars such as Mel Torme, Billy Eckstein, Sammy Davis Jnr, Sarah Vaughan, and Petula Clarke. He has worked with major international blues artists such as "Sonny Boy" Williamson, Memphis Slim, and Steve Windwood and Jazz stars such as Harry Eddison, John Barnes, Gene Connors, Tommy Sanders and Byron Stripling. He took up the bass in 1987 when he was 17 and joined several Big Bands to improve his sight-reading. Moved down to the South of England in 1991 and left music alone for a couple of years and picked up the bass again in 1996 and worked as a full time musician. In 1999 he returned to Birmingham and did a Degree in Jazz at Birmingham Conservatoire. He has had the good fortune of having received instruction from Dave Holland and Rufus Reid, Mike Gibbs and a number of other musicians of equal repute, has also had the opportunity to play with such notable musicians as Herb Geller, Soweto Kinch, Digby Fairweather, Alan Barnes and Bruce Adams among others. He is lucky enough to be able to make his living as a freelance musician and has recently finished a three month tour in Germany, Austria and Spain with a West End Show called 'The Rat Pack Live From Vegas'. He has since worked with a variety of bands and celebrities, he was a full time member of King Pleasure and the Biscuit Boys for a total of 6 years. His focus now is mainly session work and works with the Barron Knights, the Rat Pack and the Syd Lawrence Orchestra. |
